"We were finally going to start our family..."

Friday, August 13, 2010, may have been filled with negative angst for those who are superstitious, but for my husband and I who are not, it was a day filled with excitement as we welcomed our healthy, happy baby boy into the world.  This was a day we were anxiously awaiting for over three and a half years.   It was a day I dreamed about, but sometimes feared would never come to be.

In my early 30’s, I had many friends who had gotten pregnant easily and immediately after they began trying.  Although I was always happy for them when they shared their news, I would often cry to my husband and my family because again it wasn’t news I could share.  Each month I rode an emotional rollercoaster.  Yearly I was assured by my doctor that medically I was able to conceive, yet nothing happened.  She would tell me to be patient, to relax, and to have fun trying, but those words just brought frustration.  My husband, a typical man who never goes to the doctor, was pressured by me to see if maybe he was preventing us from getting pregnant.  I nagged and nagged him and in the meantime we tried every suggestion I could find in literature and on the internet.

Growing up on herbal remedies and homeopathic medicines I was seeking a natural approach.  A Type A personality, I began taking Yoga classes and worked on meditation to help me reduce stress and relax.  I began to read more and more about the use of acupuncture to increase fertility.  I remember watching Sex and the City and hearing about this method years ago, but now I was reading about real women’s experiences and success stories after acupuncture treatments.

I attended the Exeter Township School District Health Fair in the Fall of 2010 and learned that the Spine and Wellness Center had a Licensed Acupuncturist on staff, Mark Siegrist.  I met Mark that night and briefly explained my situation.  Afraid of needles I was anxious, but this was the last option I had left to explore before demanding my husband get checked out by a physician.  It was the last option to consider before we really needed to look into other more costly and less natural fertility treatments.

I scheduled my first treatment with Mark in early November 2010.  We talked a bit first and he showed me the needles and explained how they would be inserted.  He explained everything and made me feel totally relaxed.  Honestly, there was no pain or discomfort!  I scheduled three more visits.  Visits two and three were relaxing and pleasurable just like the first.  As I lay on the table I prayed that this would work, that I would get pregnant and have the opportunity to be a mom.  My fourth visit fell just a few days after my cycle was to begin and I was late.  Having gotten my hopes up before and been let down I decided to take things slow, but during this treatment I felt different.  I can’t really explain it, but I had a strong feeling that I was pregnant.  I immediately took two home pregnancy tests the following few mornings and scheduled a blood test at the doctors office because the home pregnancy tests came back positive.  Yes, I was finally pregnant!  We were finally going to start our family!  After a positive blood test I spoke with Mark to let him know acupuncture worked.  There were no words to express my gratitude.

In the future my husband and I hope to have more children.  You can bet I will be calling Mark immediately!
